Neurodevelopmental Trajectories Following Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.Eileen M. Moore & Yingjing Xia - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
Prenatal alcohol exposure interferes with neurodevelopment. The brain is particularly susceptible to the adverse consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure, and numerous studies have documented changes to brain anatomy and function, as well as consequences for cognition, behavior, and mental health. Studies in typically developing individuals have shown that the brain undergoes dynamic developmental processes over an individual’s lifespan. Furthermore, magnetic resonance imaging studies in other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders have shown that their developmental trajectories differ from the typical pattern. Therefore, (...)

    Guanxi Civility: Processes, Potentials, and Contingencies.Eileen M. Otis & Ming-Cheng M. Lo - 2003 - Politics and Society 31 (1):131-162.
Building on research that analyzes how social relations and networks shape the Chinese market, this article asks a less-studied question: How is the market changing guanxi? The authors trace the transformation of guanxi from communal, kin-based ties to a cultural metaphor with which diverse individuals build flexible social relationships in late-socialist China. As a “generalized particularism,” this cultural metaphor provides something analogous to the culture of civility in Western societies. The authors discuss the political potential of guanxi in terms of (...)

Bridgework: Globalization, Gender, and Service Labor at a Luxury Hotel.Eileen M. Otis - 2016 - Gender and Society 30 (6):912-934.
Scholars have yet to understand the gendered performance of aesthetic and emotional labor that maintains routine global power asymmetries. An ethnographic case study of service labor in a global luxury hotel in Beijing, China, reveals how women workers learn to span cultural divides as gendered capacities. These workers must not only “look good and sound right,” they must look familiar and sound understandable. Adopting the term “bridgework,” the research tracks the institutionalization of labor requiring acquisition of the body and the (...)

Power relations in IT education and work: the intersectionality of gender, race, and class.Lynette Kvasny, Eileen M. Trauth & Allison J. Morgan - 2009 - Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society 7 (2/3):96-118.
PurposeSocial exclusion as a result of gender, race, and class inequality is perhaps one of the most pressing challenges associated with the development of a diverse information technology workforce. Women remain under represented in the IT workforce and college majors that prepare students for IT careers. Research on the under representation of women in IT typically assumes women to be homogeneous in nature, something that blinds the research to variation that exists among women. This paper aims to address these issues.Design/methodology/approachThe (...)

Considering Perspectives on Transgender Inclusion in Canadian Catholic Elementary Schools: Perspectives, Challenges, and Opportunities.Cory Wright-Maley, Trent Davis, Eileen M. Gonzalez & Ryan Colwell - 2016 - Journal of Social Studies Research 40 (3):187-204.
There is a growing recognition in society that more needs to be done to support LGBTQ youth in schools. In particular, school climate reports reveal that this need is particularly pressing for transgender individuals who are little understood and often rendered invisible or made to conform to gender-normative social standards. This mixed methods study surveyed and interviewed preservice teachers at three Catholic institutions. In particular, we focus on the shifting landscape of Catholic education in Canada as it relates to the (...)

Design and Implementation Factors for Performance Measurement in Non-profit Organizations: A Literature Review.Fernanda T. Treinta, Louisi F. Moura, José M. Almeida Prado Cestari, Edson Pinheiro de Lima, Fernando Deschamps, Sergio Eduardo Gouvea da Costa, Eileen M. Van Aken, Juliano Munik & Luciana R. Leite - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Purpose: Performance measurement systems (PMS) in Nonprofit Organizations (NPOs) are more complex than in for-profit organizations. NPOs have an orientation towards social mission and values, and they consider not only organizational efficiency and viability, but also the social impact of the organization. This research provides a comprehensive synthesis of PMSs in NPOs. Design/methodology/approach: Using a literature review, supported by bibliometric and network analyses. A paper set of 240 articles related to this research field is examined. Topics that are the most (...)

Karl pearson's mathematization of inheritance: From ancestral heredity to Mendelian genetics (1895–1909).M. Eileen Magnello - 1998 - Annals of Science 55 (1):35-94.
Summary Long-standing claims have been made for nearly the entire twentieth century that the biometrician, Karl Pearson, and his colleague, W. F. R. Weldon, rejected Mendelism as a theory of inheritance. It is shown that at the end of the nineteenth century Pearson considered various theories of inheritance (including Francis Galton's law of ancestral heredity for characters underpinned by continuous variation), and by 1904 he ?accepted the fundamental idea of Mendel? as a theory of inheritance for discontinuous variation. Moreover, in (...)

    Fuck Your God in the Disco.Michael M. Moeller & Andrew Sivak - 2012 - Radical Philosophy Review 15 (1):127-144.
Our paper focuses on the recent incorporation of pop music into torture rituals at Guantánamo. After placing the violent intersection of sound and the sacred in historical perspective, we argue that Guantánamo’s so-called “disco” underscores a significant break with the past: whereas sonic weapons were traditionally called upon to conquer and control, they are now being enlisted in the wasteful pursuit of obliterating the religious devotion of an already captured enemy.

Developmental Trajectories in Diagnostic Reasoning: Understanding Data Are Confounded Develops Independently of Choosing Informative Interventions to Resolve Confounded Data.April Moeller, Beate Sodian & David M. Sobel - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Two facets of diagnostic reasoning related to scientific thinking are recognizing the difference between confounded and unconfounded evidence and selecting appropriate interventions that could provide learners the evidence necessary to make an appropriate causal conclusion. The present study investigates both these abilities in 3- to 6-year-old children. We found both competence and developmental progress in the capacity to recognize that evidence is confounded. Similarly, children performed above chance in some tasks testing for the selection of a controlled test of a (...)
